Pregnancy Back Pain

Pregnancy Back Pain is common. Studies tell us 50% to 70% of pregnant women experience pregnancy-related back pain.

Chiropractic care is popular during pregnancy because it relieves pain naturally, without the use of drugs that may be harmful to the developing baby.

Pregnant women suffer from low back pain because of the many changes their bodies undergo. For example, as the baby develops and abdominal weight gains occur, the center of gravity shifts, causing the normal low back curve to increase and additional stress placed on the sensitive spinal joints.

The increasing abdominal weight can lead to altered posture and biomechanics as we change the way we sleep, stand, and move during pregnancy. As the baby grows and the uterus expands, the abdominal muscles also stretch and lose their natural supportive function. The change in forward shift, and other postural changes are one of the chief causes of pregnancy back pain.

Hormones also play a role, especially during the third trimester. One of the functions of the hormone “relaxin” is to help loosen the pelvic joints to accommodate the enlarging uterus and baby. However, the loosening of joints can decrease joint stability and further alter posture. Other structures including musculature may be taxed, resulting in a predisposition to pain and injury.

Chiropractic offers a natural, gentle, and drug-free solution for pregnancy back pain.
