The tailbone is also known as the coccyx. It’s composed of 2 to 4 tiny vertebrae at the very bottom of the pelvis that are attached to each other and surrounding structures by muscles, tendons and ligaments.
The coccyx can be hurt in a backward fall, hard sitting, childbirth and a variety of other situations. Given the amount of winter we see in Watertown, it’s not unusual for us to see a few cases a year at Deutsch Chiropractic. Pain in the coccyx is known as coccygodenia.
Tailbone pain can be relatively severe and persistent, and it’s not unusual that the sufferer cannot sit down comfortably without a “doughnut” or “butt doughnut”.
